Do You Support a Longer School Day for San José?
One of our first priorities should be ensuring that our public schools give every child the opportunity to achieve. I am running for Mayor of San José to make our city safer, grow our economy and improve our quality of life. One initiative can help us accomplish all three: working in partnership with educators and parents to extend the school day. We are beginning to organize and build community support for this idea – learn more below and sign the petition here.
COUNCILMAN SAM LICCARDO STARTS COMMUNITY OUTREACH ON LONGER SCHOOL DAY FOR SAN JOSÉ PUBLIC SCHOOLS
San José, CA – San José City Councilman and mayoral candidate Sam Liccardo is exploring an innovative new policy strategy with the potential to improve San José’s public schools, get more kids ready for college and boost safety in the city: a longer school day for San José’s public schools.
“One of the best ways to improve our economy, increase safety and enhance our quality of life is to work in partnership with parents and educators to improve our public schools,” Liccardo said. “And while there are many, many steps we can take to strengthen our schools, the research supports a very simple intuition: students learn more when they spend more time learning.”
Liccardo’s proposal is part of a series of innovations designed to improve education, safety and quality of life in the city. His proposals include recent initiatives to restore police staffing, revitalize a key blighted historic park, and fill empty storefronts with small businesses.
“San José schools are improving in many of our 19 districts, but more time at school means more time for computer skills, supervised homework and other vital learning skills. It also means more high-school graduates who are college-ready, and has been shown to improve safety. And in a city that strives to be family-friendly, it just makes sense to help parents by creating a school day that matches their work day,” Liccardo said.
Liccardo launched a petition on Change.org to allow community members to express their support and share their ideas on extending a school day in San José.
