Three Former Mayors, Over 800 Supporters Gather to Launch Sam Liccardo’s Campaign for Mayor of San José

San José, CA – City Councilman Sam Liccardo was joined by three former mayors and more than 800 supporters last night as he formally launched his campaign for Mayor of San José. The extraordinary attendance underlined the city’s enthusiasm for independent, innovative leadership that puts citizens before special interests.

Liccardo was introduced by former Mayors Susan Hammer and Tom McEnery, and former Mayor Ron James was in attendance. Also on hand was District Attorney Jeff Rosen, former Vice Mayors Judy Chirco, Trixie Johnson, Nancy Ianni, Shirley Lewis and many more. Liccardo, who currently serves as City Councilmember for District 3, has a record of bringing people together around common-sense, data-driven solutions to improve the city, like bringing BART to San José and fighting to put 200 more cops on the street. He is proposing a series of steps to re-establish San José as the Bay Area’s economic leader and to bring excellence to all of San José’s schools.

“You came here because you and I share something in common,” Liccardo told the crowd. “Each one of us shares an aspiration. We aspire for the day when San José becomes a city as extraordinary as its citizens. We want to live in a city that we can call GREAT. We aspire to live in a city we love,” said Liccardo.

In his role on the San José City Council, Sam advocates for the downtown and its surrounding neighborhoods. His priorities have focused on neighborhood empowerment, environmental stewardship, accelerating downtown’s economic development, improving the valley’s transit system and reducing homelessness.

Prior to winning election to City Council in November of 2006, Sam served as a prosecutor of sexual assault and child exploitation crimes in the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. He previously worked as a federal prosecutor and at private law firms. Sam’s previous work in the community includes tutoring homeless children and serving on the boards of several affordable housing organizations.
