Taking on Homelessness
The Mercury News has a great piece out on an initiative I crafted to allow non-profits to temporarily lease hotel rooms to house the homeless while they get assistance getting back on their feet.
As the article notes, a perfect storm of economic conditions has made it exceptionally difficult for many to find housing here. San José currently ranks fifth in nation in terms of our homeless population, behind New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Diego.
This proposal would allow non-profits to lease hotel and motel rooms across the city from owners who have a difficult time filling rooms (some of which have become magnets for prostitution in the area). The voluntary program is supported by many neighbors who live near the establishments who are looking for some relief, and by owners have welcomed the income stability it would bring them.
The proposal is set to be considered by the City Council on Monday, and I’ll be working to make sure it passes. Thanks again to the Merc for highlighting this important issue for residents – homelessness can often be an intractable problem, but we’re working hard to improve the situation for everyone affected.
